NUT507 Applied Professional Dietetic Practice (16)

Abstract

Using the principles associated with integrating research and evaluation principles and reflective practice, students will demonstrate that they have synthesised and integrated the knowledge and skills gained in the various areas of nutrition and dietetic practice which may include either clinical, food service, management , public health nutrition or primary health care. A major independent learning project will be undertaken and reported in a fourth year seminar and conference program. This project / capstone experience may include practicum in the particular area of nutrition and dietetic practice. Students are also required to attend a compulsory two day residential school during the subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • - be able to complete a major practice-based, independent learning project associated with the synthesis of the knowledge and skills developed during their post graduate studies;
  • - be able to integrate the knowledge and skills developed during their postgraduate studies in nutrition and dietetics;
  • - be able to critically review the literature;
  • - be able to identify and select appropriate research methods to investigate and resolve practice problems;
  • - be able to conduct or use nutrition research methodology, research principles and evidence-based practice including qualitative and quantitative research methods;
  • - be able to collect and interpret information, including qualitative and quantitative data;
  • - be able to utilise ethical procedures in the research process;
  • - be able to apply valid and relevant conclusions and recommendations to practice;
  • - be able to document outcomes of research using the research process;
  • - be able to disseminate outcomes of research in professional and scientific community and formally present findings to academic audience;
  • - be able to present an accurate, clear and logical message that is targeted to the audience when speaking publicly.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- evaluation methodology on effectiveness of nutrition and dietetic practice.
- identification of a practice based project, focusing on one aspects of evidenced based nutrition and dietetics practice.
- application of the research process using appropriate research methodology, ethical processes and procedures and statistical analysis.
- dissemination of outcomes of research in professional and scientific publications.
- application of a questioning and critical approach to all aspects of nutrition and dietetic practice.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school. The residential school will be held at the end of the semester providing the opportunity for students to undertake a formal oral presentation on the outcomes of their major research/ practice based project.
