PHS250 Evolving physiotherapy clinical practice (8)

Abstract

This subject will further develop students' skills in physiotherapy practice with emphasis on musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice. This subject will also prepare students for the safe and effective use of electro-physical agents in clinical practice as relevant to the practice of musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Specific learning objectives relating to health promotion, professional values, culture and ethical responsibilities in practice will be embedded in the subject. Students will develop early skills in evidence based physiotherapy, measurement, and using the ICF framework. Concepts of mental well being will be examined as they apply to health professionals and the people they work with. Students completing this subject will complete one four week clinical placement experience where they will apply and integrate the principles learnt in this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to demonstrate an ability to integrate and apply physiotherapy knowledge and skills from musculoskeletal practice to a range of clients in practice settings.
  • Be able to apply knowledge to a range of musculoskeletal cases that focus on clinical reasoning and decision making
  • Be able to safely and effectively assess and apply physiotherapy intervention to clients with mobility impairment in order to improve their health and well being.
  • Be able to safely and effectively assess and apply electro-physical agents to clients with impairment in order to improve their health and well being
  • Be able to demonstrate effective communication skills for a team approach to a client's care, with an emphasis on goal setting.
  • Be able to prepare and provide documentation according to legal and ethical requirements and accepted procedures and standards.
  • Be able to demonstrate professional behaviour appropriate to physiotherapy.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • -Comprehensive client management approaches including collaboration and goal setting
  • -Applied anatomy, applied biomechanics, physiology (especially pain), social and psychological factors influencing musculoskeletal and responses to illness and pain
  • -Clinical reasoning for musculoskeletal conditions and their management
  • -Introduction to foundational cardiorespiratory assessment and treatment skills
  • -Background theory and practical applications of electro-physical agents as relevant to the practice of musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  • -Current approaches to managing chronic pain
  • -Integration of musculoskeletal physiotherapy approaches with a holistic approach to health and mobility
  • -The use of evidence-based practice to support decision making
  • -Rural and indigenous health issues
  • -Disability and community living for those with a musculoskeletal impairment
  • -Inter-professional collaboration
  • -Ethical and professional practice as relevant to clinical practice
  • -Self-assessment of scope of practice and referral of clients to other health professionals as required
  • -Self-assessment and reflection on own practice and development of attributes
  • -Communication skills in documenting client notes and communicating with other health professionals

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 20 days duration. One (1) four week full time Enhancing Mobility placement. A variety of clinical sites, which could include hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes and community based services, primarily located in NSW and Victoria, will be utilized for 2nd year placements.
 

Specialised Resources

Students will incur expenses in association with the workplace learning placement. These expenses include: accommodation at the placement site, travel to and from the placement site and food and living expenses.
