POD315 Mental Health, Neurological and Vascular Medicine (8)
Abstract
This subject extends the student's knowledge of vascular and neurological pathology as it relates to the practice of podiatry. The study of neurology comprises central nervous system disorders such as stroke, dementia and Parkinson's disease, and enables students to evaluate the physical, psychological and social impact of these conditions. Chronic illness is closely associated with mental illness such as anxiety and mood disorders, and students will analyse the complex interrelationship between physical and mental health. The misuse of alcohol and other drugs in association with mental illness will be explored. Students will also study the impact of peripheral neurological and vascular pathology on lower limb structure and function, with attention to the impact of disease on the person's wellbeing and functional ability. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to evaluate the aetiology, pathophysiology and clinical presentation of peripheral vascular pathology including arterial, venous, lymphatic and vasomotor conditions;
- be able to evaluate the aetiology, pathophysiology and clinical presentation of peripheral nerve damage including loss of sensory, motor and autonomic nerve function;
- be able to justify the assessment of vascular and neurological pathology to establish lower limb health
- be able to evaluate the aetiology, pathophysiology and clinical presentation of a range of central nervous system pathology;
- be able to analyse the complex interrelationship between physical and mental health in chronic illness;
- be able to explain the misuse of alcohol and other drugs in the context of mental illness and chronic disease;
- be able to evaluate the physical, emotional and social impact of mental illness, central neurological disease, peripheral vascular pathology and peripheral neurological pathology on the person, their family and carers, and on society;
- be able to evaluate the podiatric implications of a range of vascular and neurological pathology;
- be able to justify the medical, surgical and podiatric management of a range of vascular and neurological pathology;
- be able to analyse the role of the podiatrist in promoting good physical and mental health, to maintain a person's independence;
