Abstract

This subject examines a number of prevalent and serious offences in New South Wales such as domestic violence, stealing and its associated offences, e.g. breaking and entering, fraud, receiving, goods in custody, and traffic offences. Knowledge and understanding of these areas of law and the related offences are bread-and-butter issues for the general duties police constable as they are frequently encountered in the field. This subject provides the opportunity to examine these offences in detail in order to create a sound understanding of the critical issues and elements involved.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply STOPAR as a critical thinking framework in policing
  • be able to explain the causes of a range of prevalent and serious offences in New South Wales
  • be able to identify the elements of these prevalent and serious offences
  • be able to apply appropriate domestic violence legislation to scenarios
  • be able to explain appropriate strategies, along with any mandatory reporting requirements, when dealing with these offences and apply these in practical scenarios
  • be able to apply appropriate decision-making and communication skills when dealing with these offences in practical scenarios
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate empathy when dealing with the victims of these offences in scenarios

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • STOPAR as a critical thinking decision-making framework in policing
  • legal and policing issues underpinning Larceny and associated offences
  • NSWPF policies and procedures related to Larceny and associated offences
  • legal and policing issues underpinning domestic violence offences
  • NSWPF policies and procedures related to domestic violence offences
  • the enforcement of traffic law and the implementation of associated policies
  • dealing with victims of offences
  • communication strategies and techniques
