PSY432 Personnel Psychology (8)

Abstract

This subject emphasises the history, development, and the application of research methods in I/O psychology; and the principles, strategies and their application in the specific area of personnel management. With the increasing pressure on management to increase productivity and reduce costs and, at the same time, establish and maintain a committed and satisfied labour force, the knowledge and implementation of sound personnel practices is critical. Topics include the History of and Research Methods in I/O Psychology as a basis for understanding current practices. In the area of Personnel Psychology the topics include the theory and practical aspects of Criteria and Standards of Decision-Making, Psychological Assessments, Personnel Decisions, Training and Development, and Performance Appraisal.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to explain the relevance of the development and history of I/O psychology to current practices
* be able to explain and evaluate various research techniques particularly as they apply to personnel psychology
* be able to develop and apply relevant criteria in job analysis and evaluation
* be able to explain the principles of psychological testing, including ethical issues and predictive accuracy
* be able to describe the major types of psychological tests and other forms of assessment (interviews, biographical etc) and their appropriate application
* be able to apply the concepts, various models and strategies of personnel decision-making
* be able to assess, design and evaluate a modest training needs programme
* be able to understand, design, and implement a performance appraisal system

Topics include the History of I/O Psychology, Research Methods in I/O Psychology, and specifically in the area of Personnel Psychology: Criteria and Standards of Decision-Making, Psychological Assessments, Personnel Decisions, Training and Development, and Performance Appraisal.
