PSY461 Advanced Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology (8)

Abstract

This subject covers complex research designs used in psychological research, as well as the statistical techniques that deal with them. Techniques such as factorial analysis of variance, repeated measures and mixed design analyses, multiple regression and reliability analysis of scales are investigated. Students learn how to use the SPSS statistical program to apply these techniques to analysing data for research. They apply their learning in critically evaluating published research in terms of results and methodology. Emphasis is also placed on students undertaking key steps in producing a research report in an area of psychological investigation. Students will apply their learning in further study and professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the different types of research design used in psychological research and be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of different designs
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of an overview of the wide range of statistical procedures available to the researcher and be able to choose the most appropriate statistical procedures for a research design
  • be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of the interpretation of the analysis outputs of two important statistical procedures: analysis of variance and multiple regression
  • be able to evaluate research papers both from a methodological and a statistical perspective
  • be able to apply knowledge of statistics and methodology to undertake various key steps (e.g., design, data collection, screening, preparation, analysis of data, and write-up of research results) in producing research of a high quality in an area of psychology
  • be able to apply knowledge of statistics and methodology in further study and professional practice

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Methods:
  • The design of Multi-factor Research
  • Statistics:
  • Factorial Analysis of Variance
  • Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance
  • Mixed Design Analysis of Variance
  • Multiple Regression Analysis
  • Reliability Analysis
  • Computation:
  • Use of SPSS Statistical Package to analyse research data in detail
  • Interpretation of SPSS output.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 2.5 day residential school. Students attend lectures and practical laboratory sessions running and interpreting SPSS statistical analyses. The residential school also provides students with the opportunity to raise questions about and discuss the subject content and the assessment tasks.
