Abstract
This subject introduces the nature, assessment and treatment of psychological disorders in children and adolescents. Students will examine the diagnostic classification, epidemiology and aetiology of common psychological problems, including anxiety disorders, depression, behaviour disorders, and attention-deficit disorder. The theoretical and empirical foundations of a range of cognitive and behavioural techniques will be discussed, along with a number of major conceptual and practical issues in the treatment of psychological disorders in childhood and adolescence. |

- be able to employ reliable and valid methods of assessing children and adolescents with psychological disorders
- be able to develop and implement cognitive-behavioural interventions for a range of emotional and behavioural disorders
- be able to critically evaluate research concerning the efficacy of psychological therapies with children and adolescents

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- theoretical and empirical foundations of child psychopathology
- assessment of psychopathology in childhood
- nature and epidemiology of common childhood disorders
- the development and implementation of psychological interventions
- issues in psychological therapy with children and families
- the implementation of cognitive and behavioural interventions for specific disorders
- the evaluation of efficacy of interventions

Residential SchoolThis subject contains a compulsory 2.5 day residential school.
The purpose of the residential school is to provide training in specific skills required for the assessment and treatment of psychological problems in children and adolescents.
Activities include demonstration, modelling, direct instruction, role play, and feedback.
