SPA412 Integrated GIS/Remote Sensing (8)

Abstract

This subject focuses on the integration of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies. It builds on a student's existing knowledge and skills in spatial information, to examine the use of these GIS and remote sensing technologies as they apply to natural resource management problems. A major emphasis will be placed on students completing a case study incorporating the use of remote sensing and GIS. The subject  has no residential school. Students completing this subject are able to develop and present a project outline which requires the integration of remote sensing and GIS technologies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • have an in-depth knowledge about the way integrated remote sensing/GIS projectscan address a broad range of real world uses
  • have the ability to process raster data for merging with GIS data
  • be able to extract information from raster based data using computer-based classification; Integrate raster data into a GIS for data analysis
  • have the ability to develop a project outline which requires the integration of remote sensing and GIS technologies and present and communicate this coherently

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  1. Models of data integration;
  2. Raster image rectification;
  3. Raster image classification;
  4. Data stratification;
  5. Thematic data accuracy assessment;
  6. Data error sources;
  7. GIS analytical techniques;
  8. Map design and production.

Specialised Resources

Students are expected to be able to gain access for a significant amount of the session to an IBM PC or one of its many variants.Students will be supplied with ENVI and ESRI ArcView GIS as well as key data sets to allow the completion of all practical exercises
