SPA503 GIS Algorithms (8)

Abstract

In this subject students learn the advanced mathematical knowledge and skills required to analyse and develop mathematical algorithms for GIS. This includes developing a good understanding of mathematical concepts required for the development of GIS related algorithms, developing skills in solving linear algebra problems, having an ability to analyse, modify and design various GIS algorithms.

Assumed Knowledge

Introductory mathematics at tertiary level and GIS background at the level of SPA415 or equivalent.

Enrolment restrictions

Undergraduate students may not enrol in this subject unless approved by their Course Director and the Subject Coordinator. Students who have completed SPA403 may not enrol in this subject

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to implement mathematical concepts required for the development of GIS related algorithms;
  • be able to make sound judgements regarding the appropriate applications of computational geometry concepts to GIS;
  • be able to analyse, modify and design various GIS algorithms that employ geometrical concepts.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Concept of space as applied to GIS
  • Matrix operations
  • Vectors in Euclidean space
  • Geometric algorithms used in GIS
  • Geometry of transformations used in GIS
  • Line simplification and smoothing
  • Interpolation and curve fitting
  • Graphs, networks and topology
  • The use of a computer algebra package in the development of spatial algorithms
