SPH405 Therapeutic Communication Practice 4a (Honours) (12)


This workplace learning (WPL) subject represents one of two final year subjects undertaken by Honours students that together require students to build on previously acquired knowledge and skills in order to demonstrate competency in the speech pathology scope of practice, as defined by the Competency-Based Occupational Standards for Entry Level Speech Pathologists (CBOS; SPA, 2011). During this subject, students may work primarily with either an adult or pediatric population, and settings of practice may include hospitals, community health centres, disability organisations, and education departments. All WPL experiences will be unique, but all experiences will provide students with the supervision and opportunities to consolidate and demonstrate their professional knowledge and skills. This first WPL subject will also provide students with opportunities to develop skills in service management, professional/supervisory and reflective practice, which will be consolidated further in SPH415.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to demonstrate competency at entry level standard in the assessment and management of the population with whom they have been working (adult/peditatric) as defined by the Competency-Based Occupational Standards for Entry Level Speech Pathologists (CBOS; SPA, 2011) Units 1-4.
  • Be able to demonstrate competency at an intermediate to entry level standard in the management of services, professional/supervisory and reflective practice, as defined by CBOS Units 5-7;
  • Be able to demonstrate competency at entry level standard in communication, reflection, lifelong learning and professionalism as defined by the Competency Assessment (COMPASS) Generic Competencies.


The subject will cover the following topics:
  • This is a workplace learning subject and so the experiences and learning of all students will vary depending on the client population with whom they are working and the service in which they are based. However, all will have opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in the following:
  • Planning and administering assessments of communication and/or swallowing (CBOS Unit 1);
  • Analysing and interpreting assessment data, and reporting on assessment data to a range of specialist and non-specialist audiences (CBOS Unit 2);
  • Planning evidence-based speech pathology practices, including writing specific and measurable goals, justifying and documenting decisions (CBOS Unit 3);
  • Implementing speech pathology practice with individuals with communication and/or swallowing difficulties, their families and communities, and monitoring/documenting progress (CBOS Unit 4);
  • Planning, providing and managing speech pathology services, including collaboration with others in practice/research (CBOS Unit 5);
  • Understanding the principles and practices of clinical education and supervision, and contributing to team-based relationships (CBOS Unit 6);
  • Upholding the Code of Ethics and advocating for clients and the speech pathology profession (CBOS Unit 7).

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 30 to 32 days duration. Students will complete 8 weeks (4 days per week) of workplace learning (WPL) with predominantly either an adult or paediatric caseload.

Specialised Resources

Students may incur expenses associated with workplace learning experiences, including costs of travel, accommodation, uniform and resource development. Students must also have access to a digital voice recorder for all clinical sessions.
