SPH517 Introduction to workplace learning in speech pathology (year-long subject) (8)

Abstract

In the subject you will apply your knowledge and practice of speech pathology cognitive, creative and technical skills in a 5-week workplace learning experience in the areas of sensory-motor, language and/or cognitive impairments. This subject is the first of two workplace learning subjects in which you engage with paediatric and/or adult clients and their families/caregivers.
Under the guidance of certified practicing speech pathologists you will develop and demonstrate skills in accordance with Speech Pathology Australia's Competency Based Occupational Standards (revised 2011) as assessed by COMPASS. This includes skills in assessment, analysis and interpretation, intervention planning, implementing evidence based intervention, service delivery, reflective and supervisory practice and lifelong learning.
To demonstrate mastery of these learning outcomes and learning experiences you will create an assessment and intervention toolbox, and satisfactorily meet the requirements of an entry level speech pathologist according to the descriptors in the COMPASS evaluation tool. Within the COMPASS tool you will also identify your goals for your placement and evaluate your performance with your supervising speech pathologist.
You will use the online COMPASS evaluation tool and the CSU Interact2 online communication tools (discussion boards/wikis/chat room/blog etc).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to demonstrate application of technical skills and knowledge, to the assessment and management of sensory motor, language and/or cognitive difficulties using professional frameworks and models of practice. This will be demonstrated during your 5 week WPL and the creation of your assessment and intervention toolkit.
  • Be able to reflect critically on personal and educational experiences during this course to identify and justify, as well as review, personal learning goals and strategies for achieving those goals during workplace learning. This will be recorded in the online COMPASS tool and demonstrated during your 5 week WPL.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 20 to 25 days duration. Students will complete a 5-week block of WPL in a clinical setting (e.g. community health clinic, hospital, disability service) in a metropolitan or regional area. During the WPL, students will work primarily with either paediatric or adult populations, supervised by a practicing speech pathologist. They will be required to demonstrate Entry Level competence for assessment and intervention with the population serviced, as required by the Competency-Based Occupational Standards (CBOS) for Speech Pathologists. This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 20 to 25 days duration. Students will complete a 5-week block of WPL in a clinical setting (e.g. community health clinic, hospital, disability service) in a metropolitan or regional area. During the WPL, students will work primarily with either paediatric or adult populations, supervised by a practicing speech pathologist. Specialised Resources

Students may incur expenses associated with workplace learning experiences, including costs of travel, accommodation, uniform and resource development. Students must also have access to a digital voice recorder for all clinical sessions.
