Abstract|
This subject surveys the biblical sources and major historical developments of Christian thinking concerning the claim that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ of God. The primary focus is on central sources and methods that have shaped christological debates since 1800 CE. The subject includes critical assessments of the quests for the historical Jesus and arguments for Christ being both human and divine. The meaning of salvation, the atonement, and the resurrection is explored. Further contemporary themes are examined, including Christology and religious pluralism, liberation Christologies, contextual Christologies, and the present Christ. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to discuss key aspects of the biblical witness that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised messiah of God
- be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the major classical developments in the theology of the person and work of Jesus Christ
- be able to articulate important critiques made by post-Enlightenment theology of traditional approaches to christology and soteriology, and current evaluations of these critiques
- be able to expound at least one major contemporary approach to christology
- be able to demonstrate self-guided learning, including research, writing and communication skills

- Biblical witness to Jesus Christ
- Patristic developments: the humanity and divinty of Christ
- the quests for the historical Jesus
- salvation, the atonement and the question of violence
- the resurrection and ascension
- the present Christ, Spirit and faith
- the uniqueness of Christ in a pluralist world
- liberation Christologies: feminist, liberationist and ecological
- the meaning of Christ in relation to culture and public life
