Abstract| This subject provides a holistic framework for the practice of pastoral and spiritual care in later life. It focuses on changes in the ageing body, experiences of ageing, the common illnesses of ageing, and is set against a theological understanding of health and illness in later life. Positive ageing and the process of self-transcendence, while living with suffering, pain and bodily disabilities are also examined. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to recognise the normal process of ageing and expected physiological changes which occur as part of the ageing process;
- be able to give an account of the common diseases of ageing;
- be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the spiritual, physiological, and medical concerns of older people;
- be able to demonstrate a critical theological understanding concerning the ageing body, and to apply that understanding to the integration of appropriate approaches to pastoral care with older people;
- be able to demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the skills needed to work effectively with older people and other members of a health care team in the pastoral care context;
- be able to demonstrate an enhanced working knowledge of the vocabulary of health and illness in later life relevant to spiritual and pastoral care. |

- the physiological process of ageing: normal ageing versus pathology in ageing
- a theology of the body
- the interrelationship between physical and psychological illness
- age-related changes of the human body, pathology and assessment
- transcendence of disabilities associated with ageing: a theological perspective
- a systems approach to understanding physiological processes and pathology in ageing frrom the perspective of the spiritual and pastoral carer:
a. Cardiovascular and respiratory changes
b. Gastrointestinal system
c. Urinary-genital system
d. Sensory changes and ageing
e. Cognitive changes and disorders
f. Falls and mobility
g. Issues of pain in later life
- defining death, the experience of dying and understanding of the physical process and anxiety associated with anticipation of death: a pastoral and spiritual perspective
- the role of the pastoral carer - responding to the medical experience as a non-medical professional
- the multidisciplinary team in aged care and the role of pastoral carers in the team |
