Abstract

This subject introduces Christian theology as a critical discipline in the church and in relation to wider society. Revelation, scripture, tradition, reason, experience and praxis are examined as key factors in theological reasoning. Central teachings of the Christian faith, including God as trinity, the person and work of Christ, the Spirit, humanity and the church, are introduced. These Christian doctrines are critically retrieved for Christian life and community in various contemporary contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss the task of theology as part of the work and ministry of the Christian community;
  • demonstrate a basic understanding of the nature, methods, sources and content of Christian theology;
  • be able to formulate a critical and reflective personal expression of Christian faith in contemporary culture;
  • be able to engage critically with a variety of contemporary approaches to theology; and
  • demonstrate self-guided learning, including research, writing and communication skills.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • being a theologian
  • the task of theology
  • theological engagement with socio-cultural contexts
  • factors in theological thinking: revelation, scripture, tradition, reason, experience, culture, praxis
  • the critical retrieval of various Christian doctrines
  • the Christian witness to the revelation of God and human responses to it

Residential School

This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school. The residential school for this subject provides an orientation to the subject matter, methodology, library resources and research tools pertaining to the study of Christian Theology.

Activities include lectures, library orientation and group work.
