VIT312 Vineyard Establishment (8)

Abstract

This subject covers factors that should be considered in the establishment of a vineyard. This incorporates climate, soil, site selection, planting material, and the process of setting up a vineyard. This subject commences in session 1 and concludes in session 2. Students must enrol in both sessions 1 and 2. It is not possible to commence this subject in session 2.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to assess the suitability of a site for viticulture
  • be able to evaluate the suitability of varieties, clones and rootstocks for a chosen site
  • be able to understand issues related to sources and availability of planting material
  • be able to design and develop a vineyard in a manner that will minimise variability and ensure sustainability
  • be able to identify site-specific vineyard management practices for the production of grapes and wine of desired style and quality

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • regions and climate; factors to be considered on selecting an appropriate vineyard site
  • site selection; macro- and mesoclimate and soil factors as affecting eco-physiology of the grapevine
  • planting material; variety and rootstock properties and choice; vine improvement programs in Australia and other countries; clonal selection and evaluation; current vine improvement issues
  • site preparation, planting and training; practices to be undertaken, preplanting and planting, choice of vineyard design, and care of the vine in the first two to three years
  • sources of vineyard variability and management strategies to overcome its negative effect on fruit attributes (including precision viticulture and remote sensing).
  • basics of vineyard business, particularly the key business-related decisions involved in vineyard establishment and management

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school. There is a 3 day residential school that will cover the practical components of the subject.  The residential school covers the practical aspects on site ground and soil surveys (including vineyard safety practices to perform these tasks safely), to establish a vineyard and variety selection. These practical activities are a fundamental part of subsequent assessment items and training students in these methods would not be possible in an uncontrolled context.
