Abstract

This subject introduces students to advanced sound design, creation, sound mixing and delivery standards for broadcast and screen. The subject explores original sound design, dialogue mixing, together with final sound mixing and deliveries for various broadcast standards including film, television, DVD, radio and music.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to edit and restore sound recordings
  • understand and use noise reduction
  • be able to mix all audio components to industry standards for broadcast
  • be able to master final audio mix for various media output and exhibition
  • have an understanding of audio literacies
  • be able to critically analyse audio productions
  • be able to create original sounds using original sound recording and synthesis

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • dialogue clean up and noise reduction
  • using EQ and compression
  • sound effects design and mixing
  • atmosphere editing for surround sound
  • surround sound mixing
  • broadcast audio mastering
  • ADR integration into location dialogue

Specialised Resources

This subject is a specialised subject requiring specialised equipment. Technical requirements needed include:
  • broadcast mastering software
  • surround sound capable mixing desk 
  • surround sound monitors
  • noise reduction software.
