VPA414 Research Methods for Arts Practice (Honours) (16)

Abstract

Students study visual and performance arts practice research methods and apply them to their discipline. Key learning areas include arts practice as research, performance analysis, reception theory, survey research, content and textual analysis, qualitative research, ethnography and field studies. Emphasis is given to the application of research techniques.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- understand and be able to apply research methods commonly used in the visual and performing arts industries, including:
- arts practice as research
- qualitative research methods
- be able to examine the underlying assumptions and theoretical models of commonly used research methods
- have the knowledge and ability to critically examine debates about the appropriateness of research methods commonly used in the arts
- have the skills and abilities to develop and write up a research proposal
- be able to plan and undertake a small scale research project demonstrating the use of appropriate research methods
- have the knowledge and ability to analyse the results of that research project and write the report

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- research methods commonly used in the arts, including: - arts practice as research - qualitative research methods - the underlying assumptions and theoretical models of commonly used research methods - the appropriateness of research methods commonly used in the theatre, design and television industries - developing and writing up research proposals - undertaking a small scale research project demonstrating the use of appropriate methods - analysing the results of that research - report writing
