Graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) will demonstrate specialised knowledge and critical understandings of a range of theoretical approaches used in early childhood education, particularly those relating to early childhood curriculum, pedagogies, content and approaches; understanding of the methods of inquiry and research in early childhood education, combined with understandings of the applications of these and implications for policy and practice; extended discipline knowledge combined with understandings of appropriate pedagogies for children aged birth to five years; leadership skills appropriate to the educational context; and the capacity to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and other professionals, within and across disciplines.

Full-time 4 years (8.0 sessions)


Part-time 8.0 years (16.0 sessions)

Overall Duration: 4 Actual duration (FTE): 2.0 There is an initial standard 128 point credit package for all students. For students who have completed the CSU Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five) prior to 2012 / a Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five) at another institution, there is a standard 192 point credit package upon entry. For students who have completed the CSU Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five) since 2012 there is a standard 208 point credit package upon entry to the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five).

Normal course duration is the effective period of time taken to complete a course when studied Full-time (Full-time Equivalent: FTE). Students are advised to consult the Enrolment Pattern for the actual length of study. Not all courses are offered in Full-time mode.

Admission criteria

CSU Admission Policy

To be admitted to the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) students must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Diploma of Childrens Services
  • Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years)
  • Three year Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching qualification from a recognised university

or an equivalent qualification deemed appropriate by the Faculty.

English Language Proficiency Entry Requirements for Teacher Education Preparation Programs

English Language Proficiency entry requirements for non-Anglophone International students are: an overall IELTS (or equivalent) score of 7.5 (with no score below 7 in reading and writing, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening). This English Language Proficiency requirement is waived for applicants who have successfully completed a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (or equivalent) from a recognised institution, instructed in English in Australia.

Note: Please refer to relevant National or State employing bodies for their English language proficiency requirements when seeking employment.

Credit

CSU Credit Policy

The credit arrangements have been organised as follows:

* Students who have completed the Diploma of Children’s Services - now known as the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care CHC30113) - (AQF 5) through a Registered Training Organisation within the past 10 years will be granted credit of 128 points in recognition of prior study. This entry level credit is represented as EDU14C Early Childhood Studies Credit .

* Students who enrol in the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) program with a Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching qualification from another University or tertiary institution will be granted entry level credit of 192 points in recognition of prior study. This entry level credit is represented as EDU15C Early Childhood Studies Credit.

* Students who enrol in the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) program with a Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) completed at CSU in 2012 or later will be granted entry level credit of 208 points in recognition of prior study.  This will be represented as EDU18C.

Students who enter the course with both the Diploma and a partial early childhood degree from another university may be entitled to further credit for individual subjects if:
·         Those subjects were completed at Year 3 level in their prior degree course, and
·         Those subjects correlate closely with subjects in the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) at CSU.

Graduation requirements

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 256 points.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) consists of the twelve (12) core subjects plus an additional four (4) elective subjects.


The order of subject selection is largely flexible - however the following structural rules are to be followed:

* Students must commence by studying the subjects EEB309 Wellness and Wellbeing, and EEP417 Rights of the Child;

* Students must complete EEB309, EEP417, EML302 (Investigation: Literacy) and EMC305 (Investigation: Maths, Science and Technology) before undertaking the placement subjects EPT308 and EPT326;

* Students must complete EEB423 Leadership and Management before enrollingin EEB427 Leading Early Childhood.
Notes:

• Students who have completed a Diploma of Children's Services / Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care will receive a standard entry level credit package of 128 points, represented as EDU14C Early Childhood Studies, based on prior qualifications.

• Students who enter the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) program following completion of the Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) or equivalent at another University will be required to complete 8 of the subjects listed below. All such students receive a standard entry level credit package of 192 points, represented as EDU15C Early Childhood Studies, based on prior qualifications.

* Students who completed the Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) at CSU in 2012 or later will receive an entry level credit package of 208 credit points, represented as EDU18C Early Childhood Studies.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) has been assessed under section 137 (1) (a) of the Education and Care Services National Law and it has been determined that this qualification has met the requirements for approved ECT level education and care qualifications. This current approval period extends until 31 December 2021.


Professional Recognition for NSW Early Childhood Teachers from 2016.

Graduates of the BEd (Birth to Five) who choose to work in NSW in long day care and preschools will need to be accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (ESA).  This will apply to early childhood teachers who are currently employed in full time, part time or casual positions in an approved early childhood education and care service. They must also  hold an early childhood teaching qualification approved or recognised by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and deliver and assess against the Early Years Learning Framework.
