The Bachelor of Science (Honours) has the flexibility to meet the differing needs of students wishing to specialise in many of the disciplines offered by the Faculty. The Honours course typically includes a substantial research project.The objectives of the course are to provide knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the conduct of research, especially for entry to higher degree courses; to develop an advanced level of knowledge in the area of specialisation; and to further develop verbal and written skills relevant to advanced studies and research.

Admission criteria

CSU Admission Policy

Bachelor of Science (Honours)

To be eligible for admission applicants must have been awarded, or be eligible to graduate with, a three-year Bachelor degree in an appropriate discipline from a recognised tertiary institution. Normally, to be eligible,  a student must possess a GPA 5.0 or above in their Bachelor Pass degree, and have completed this degree in minimum time.

Credit

CSU Credit Policy

Standard CSU credit regulations apply. Credit may only be granted for the coursework component of the course, not for the dissertation or project.

Graduation requirements

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

Course Structure

Students must complete:
1. One 8-point subject in research methods, selected from the following list in consultation with the supervisor and School Honours Co-ordinator*:

SCI415 Social Science Research Methods for Natural Resource Management
SCI420 Research Methods
STA401 Postgraduate Scientific Statistics
• Alternative 8-point research methods as agreed by the supervisor and School Honours Co-ordinator, and with the approval of the Associate Dean (Honours)

2. 40-56 credit points comprised of the most appropriate combination of Science Honours Project/Dissertation subjects from the following list:

HRS416 Science Honours Project/Dissertation (16 points)
HRS417 Science Honours Project/Dissertation (16 points, 2 sessions)
HRS424 Science Honours Project/Dissertation (24 points)
HRS432 Science Honours Project/Dissertation (32 points)
HRS433 Science Honours Project/Dissertation (32 points, 2 sessions)
HRS440 Science Honours Project/Dissertation (40 points, 2 sessions)
HRS448 Science Honours Project/Dissertation (48 points, 2 sessions)
HRS449 Science Honours Project/Dissertation (48 points, 3 sessions)

Students may complete up to 16 credit points in elective coursework subjects* where this is deemed relevant to their development within a discipline and of value to their Honours degree and project. The 8-16 points will result in fewer credit points comprising the Project/Dissertation subject combination outlined above. Elective subjects taken in the discipline development component will be through consultation and approval of the supervisor and School Honours Co-ordinator. Suitability of elective subjects will be determined on the basis of relevance to the discipline, and being at an appropriate subject level for the award of a Level 8 AQF qualification.

*The final class of Honours grade will be based on assessment in the Project/Dissertation subject/s only. The research methods and any elective coursework subjects will not contribute to the honours class.

Enrolment Pattern

Students will be required to take the research methods subject in their first session of enrolment. Elective subject/s will be taken in the most appropriate session of study as agreed between the student, supervisor, and School Honours Co-ordinator. Remaining study loads in any given session will be comprised of the most appropriate selection of Project/Dissertation subjects. Typical enrolment patterns are shown below:

Professional accreditation does not apply to these "add on" Honours; for those disciplines with professional accreditation this takes place as part of the preceding Bachelor pass degree.
