The Master of Education, which has specialisations in Educational Leadership, Information Technologies, Contemporary Literacies, and Educational Research, is a flexible degree providing a coursework program for professionals who are associated with the practice of education and wish to advance their skills, knowledge base and qualifications. The degree is designed to encourage and permit critical appraisal of policy, theory and practice in the education professions; improve the educator's professional competence and enlarge the capacity for self development; provide the basis for leadership in the educator's chosen educational venture; increase awareness of the importance of educational research; and permit highly qualified graduates of the programs to proceed to higher research degrees.

The Graduate Certificate in Education is a flexible, coursework program for professionals who are associated with the practice of education and wish to advance their skills, knowledge base and qualifications. The program is designed to increase awareness of the importance of educational research; encourage and permit critical appraisal of policy, theory and practice in the education professions; and, improve the educator's professional competence and enlarge the capacity for self development.

Admission criteria

CSU Admission Policy

Master of Education (with specialisations)

An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Education must have at least the following minimum qualifications:

  • hold the degree of Bachelor of Education or equivalent from an approved tertiary institution;
    or
  • hold the degree of Bachelor of Education (Honours) or equivalent from an approved tertiary institution;
    or
  • hold a Bachelor degree or equivalent from an approved tertiary institution with an end-on integrated professional teaching qualification (such as a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Bachelor of Teaching);
    or
  • possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty.

Master of Education (with specialisations)

Credit may be granted where a student has completed study at an appropriate level beyond an initial four years of tertiary study where this study does not constitute part of the admission criteria.

EDU51C - Education Studies Level 5 Subject - 8 subject points Transfer Credit (TCR) will be granted where an applicant has successfully completed the Experienced Principals Development Course (EPDC) delivered by the Ontario Principals Council and accredited by the Ontario Council of Teachers.

EDU51C - Education Studies Level 5 Subject - 8 subject points Transfer Credit (TCR) will be granted where an applicant has successfully completed the standard Principals Qualification Programs (PQPs) Part 1 and Part 2 delivered by providers accredited by the Ontario Council of Teachers.

EDU51C - Education Studies Level 5 Subject - 8 points Transfer Credit (TCR) will be granted where an applicant has successfully completed the Special Education for Administrators Program delivered by providers accredited by the Ontario Council of Teachers.

ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership - 8 subject point Transfer Credit (TCR) and ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations - 8 subject points Transfer Credit (TCR) will be granted where an applicant has completed the enhanced Masters Dimension Principals Qualification Program (PQP) Part 1 and Part 2 developed in partnership between CSU and the Ontario Principals Council and accredited by the Ontario Council of Teachers.

ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership - 8 subject point Transfer Credit (TCR) and ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations - 8 subject points Transfer Credit (TCR) will be granted where an applicant has completed the enhanced Masters Dimension Principals Qualification Program (PQP) Part 1 and Part 2, developed in partnership between CSU and the Catholic Principals Council of Ontario and accredited by the Ontario Council of Teachers.

EDU51C - Education Studies Level 5 Subject - 8 subject points Transfer Credit (TCR)  will be granted on the basis of three part Additional Qualification (AQ) (includes three part specialist short courses that are recognised by Ontario College of Teachers (OCT)) .

EDU51C - Education Studies Level 5 Subject - 8 subject points Transfer (TCR) credit will be granted on the basis of Honour Specialist (an appropriate Secondary Specialist course, with an Honours degree, as recognised by Ontario College of Teachers (OCT)).

EDU51C - Level 5 Education Studies Level 5 Subject - 16 points Transfer Credit (TCR) will be granted on the basis of a Combined (double) Honour Specialist (two appropriate Secondary Specialist courses, with an Honours degree, as recognised by Ontario College of Teachers (OCT)).

Articulation

The Master and Graduate Certificate [Exit Point Only] make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

Graduate Certificate in Education [Exit Point Only]

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 32 points.

Course Structure

This course consists of 64 points of study. A maximum of two 8-point level 4 subjects may be chosen (except with prior written permission from the Course Coordinator). The requirements for the individual Master of Education program and specialisations are listed below.

Master of Education

The general Master of Education (MEd) has two compulsory subjects, namely,

Students must also complete a minimum of 32 points (or the equivalent of four 8-point subjects) from the Information Technologies specialisation as shown below and a further 16 points (or the equivalent of two 8-point subjects).

Master of Education (Educational Research)

The Master of Education (Educational Research) consists of 64 points (or the equivalent of eight 8-point subjects) including one compulsory education subject, namely, EER504 Education as a Profession in the 21st Century* (which must be undertaken in the first session of study). Students must also complete a minimum of 32 points (or the equivalent of four 8-point subjects) from the Educational Research specialisation as shown below and a further 24 (or the equivalent of three 8-point subjects) or 16 points (or the equivalent of two 8-point subjects).

Note 1: With the permission of the Course Coordinator, students may be able to substitute one subject in a specialisation (with EEB501 Preparing a Literature Review) or two subjects in a specialisation (with ERP502 Master of Education Project [16 points]). If EEB501 and/or ERP502 are to be included as substitutes the submissions required in these two subjects must be based on a topic related to the specialisation.

Note 2: Before enrolling in ERP502 MEd Project, students are strongly advised to complete EER500 Introduction to Educational Research, EER501 Qualitative Research Methods or EER502 Quantitative Research Methods and EEB501 Preparing a Literature Review.

* Key Subject

EER504 Education as a Profession in the 21st Century is a key subject in all courses.

Graduate Certificate in Education (exit point only)

Students wishing to exit from the MEd with a Graduate Certificate must have completed four subjects (32 points).

Enrolment Pattern

Because there are a limited number of compulsory subjects in the MEd it is impossible to provide a specific enrolment pattern. The patterns shown below indicate possible patterns of study utilising Session 1 and Session 2. However, some subjects in the MEd program are also offered in Session 3 and enrolment in this Session is also possible.
