The Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling is designed to extend the academic qualifications of people working in pastoral and clinical counselling or ministry settings including clergy and laity. Pastoral care and counselling skills are exercised in a variety of institutional settings within the overall framework of the churches in Australia at the corporate and congregational levels of denominations, universities, military, corrective services, police, ambulance, trade and industry and like situations.

The Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Counselling, an exit point in the Master of Arts (Pastoral Counselling), is designed to extend the academic qualifications of people working in pastoral and clinical counselling or ministry settings including clergy and laity. Admission criteria

Master of Pastoral Counselling

Applicants should:

  1. be able to demonstrate personal suitability to undertake professional practice as a pastoral counsellor, including self-awareness, relational capacity, personal ethical practice, being able to reflect on and learn from experience, and being open to positive and challenging feedback; and
  2. hold an undergraduate degree in theology, psychology or equivalent - applicants with degrees in other disciplines are encouraged to apply; or
  3. have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling at CSU; or
  4. hold a Graduate Diploma of Counselling from another institution; if so they may be required to complete the core subject theological component of the CSU Graduate Diploma of Theology before being granted admission to the Master of Pastoral Counselling.
Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling
  1. Applicants should be able to demonstrate personal suitability to undertake professional practice as a pastoral counsellor, including self-awareness, relational capacity, personal ethical practice, being able to reflect on and learn from experience, and being open to positive and challenging feedback; and
  2. Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in theology, psychology or equivalent. Applicants with degrees in any other disciplines are encouraged to apply; or
  3. Applicants without an undergraduate degree will be considered, with evidence that they are able to undertake tertiary studies in this area (such as a letter of motivation and two professional or academic references), as assessed by the Course Coordinator.

 

Credit

CSU Credit Policy

Master of Pastoral Counselling

Credit of up to 64 points will be granted for successful completion of the Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling offered by CSU, School of Theology.

Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling

Credit will be awarded for 400 level subjects completed in the Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Counselling. Credit will not be awarded for 100-300 level subjects.

Articulation

The Master, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate [Exit Point Only] make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 128 points.

Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Counselling [Exit Point Only]

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 32 points.

Accreditation

The School of Theology intends to apply for accreditation for the Master of Pastoral Counselling (Clinical) through the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).

The course has been written to meet the PACFA training standards for 2013. Upon approval of registration by PACFA graduates of the Master of Pastoral Counselling in the Clinical stream will be eligible, on completion of further counselling hours, for admission as clinical members of the professional associations which are member associations of PACFA, and for registration with PACFA.
