AGS201 Rural Revegetation (8)

Abstract

This subject explores the issues and problems of revegetation of private and public rural lands using suitable native trees, shrubs and understory species, and provides the technical support necessary to design and implement local revegetation plans. Students are required to achieve learning outcomes relevant to each stage of the revegetation process, viz, site assessment, species selection, project planning and design, evaluation of alternate establishment strategies, and project management and maintenance. Assessment is based on a series of written milestone reports for a revegetation project designed by the student and a review of published literature on the different approaches to revegetation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to accurately identify the value and roles of trees and associated vegetation in rural ecosystems, both disturbed and natural
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of how to evaluate the impacts on natural vegetation that human activity has created (agriculture, recreation, extractive industries, or urban development), and develop revegetation plans which can mitigate against them
- Be able to accurately conduct a biophysical appraisal for a site requiring revegetation
- Be able to develop revegetation targets and strategies for specific situations and land degradation problems integrating these into property or site plans
- Be able to select species to suit specific revegetation objectives, and evaluate alternate establishment methods
- Be able to recommend various maintenance techniques for revegetation projects, and nominate their optimum timing
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of how to access and evaluate quality information regarding revegetation at local, regional and national levels
- Be able to present recommendations for a case study situation in a formal report, as if consultant or project manager for a major revegetation project.
