AGS204 Livestock Breeding and Selection (8)

Abstract

This subject is primarily intended to provide an understanding livestock breeding and selection through the principles of genetic and reproductive principles, technologies, and breeding objectives and selection methodologies used in livestock breeding, and genetic diseases and disorders . The subject will cover the modern biology of domestic livestock animal genetics, principles underlying livestock breeding and selection and the genetic foundation underlying the use of estimated breeding values to make predications of an animal’s potential breeding value. The subject provides a more in depth study of the principles behind common sire selection programs. Reproductive and genetic technologies used in meeting production and management goals are also discussed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the underlying principles of molecular biology and apply such concepts within the context of genetics and inheritance
  • Be able to critically discuss the application of genetic technologies used in livestock breeding systems
  • Be able to apply genetic principles to maximise the rate of genetic gain of economically important traits in a livestock population
  • Be able to apply and justify quantitative measures of genetic merit to select appropriate genetic inputs to improve livestock enterprise productivity
  • Be able to explain and evaluate the application of reproductive technologies used to influence or enhance livestock production towards management goals through the manipulation of normal biological cycles/processes that occur in livestock
  • Be able to research and discuss the occurrence of various livestock genetic diseases and/or disorders, identifying their effect on production and recommend evidence-based options for management
