Abstract|
This subject is to develop an awareness of professional activities within the horse industry. Within this subject students are required to demonstrate competent, safe, basic horse management practice as well as investigate the application of risk assessment, duty of care, professional ethics, animal ethics and responsibilities. ASC106 serves as an occupational health and safety prerequisite for other equine subjects involving horse handling. This subject has a 2 day residential school. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a practical application of the concept of a "duty of care" as it applies to the horse industry
- be able to evaluate and identify "safe" industry practices
- be able to demonstrate an awareness of basic legal concepts as they apply to the horse industry
- be able to demonstrate safe horse handling and management skills.
- be able to develop an understanding of 'ethics" in general and ethics in relation to the horse industry.
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the rationale behind horse husbandry and management practices; and
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the structure and contribution of the horse industry in Australia and globally

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Responsibilities associated with the horse industry
- Duty of care
- Risk management
- Contracts -sales, agistment, lease
- Ethics and the horse industry
- Safe horse handling skills

Residential School| This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.
The purpose of the Residential school is to allow students to have compulsory industry skills assessed on campus. Students may apply for exemption from the Residential School if they can provide evidence of having already acquired these skills. Students may claim recognition of industry qualifications and experience with suitable evidence eg Equestrian Australia NCAS certificates or equivalent for the skills assessment portion of this subject.
