ASC201 Equine Reproduction & Breeding Management (8)

Abstract

This subject provides a study of the functional anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system of the horse, with particular emphasis on applied breeding management.  Topics covered include breeding techniques and facilities, stallion fertility and management, mare oestrous cycles and their management to maximise breeding efficiency, equine pregnancy, parturition and management of the post-partum mare and foal. This subject gives students realistic scenarios and allows them to make decisions on management of broodmares and stallions based on their understanding of the subject material. For those students enrolled by distance education, this subject includes a 3 day compulsory residential school.
