Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
(a) Objectively assess a horse?s health status
(b) Implement a strategic parasite control program for a group of horses
(c) Implement a basic vaccination regimen for a group of horses
(d) Administer appropriate first aid to an injured / ill horse
(e) Justify their horse care practices based on scientific principles (evidence based)
(f) Defend and justify their view point on animal welfare
(g) Incorporate best practice into their individual horse and multi horse care routines
(h) Make an informed decision on whether veterinary asisstance is required for a horse problem
(i) Be critical about the various sources of information available to horse owners / managers

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
(a) Theory and practice of vaccination
(b) Theory and practice of strategic internal parasite control
(c) Herd health vs individual health & principles of disease prevention
(d) Legal issues relevant to horse owners / managers
(e) Principles of a pre-purchase examination
(f) Principles of asepsis in an equine environment
(g) Basic wound healing and how to optimise this
(h) General principles of equine infectious disease with emphasis on prevention. Reference is made to some exotic diseases.
(i) Prescription medication from a legal and safety perspective
(j) Principles and administration of first aid to injured horses
(k) Stress in horses and the importance of minimising this
