ASC390 Transition to the Veterinary Technology Profession (8)
Abstract|
This subject involves preparation of students for their future employment as veterinary technologists by requiring students to integrate and consolidate knowledge and skills developed in preceding and concurrrent subjects. As such it is an opportunity to examine the role of the veterinary technologist including legislation, professional obligations, ethical dilemmas and introductory business acumen. Ethical and welfare dilemmas are discussed during case based presentations. Students will have the opportunity to research a contemporary issue of relevance to the veterinary paraprofession and will undertake a review of the literature. Presentation of this literature review to a group of peers and academics will provide students with the opportunity for critical review of their work. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to clearly articulate their professional legal restrictions as a veterinary technologist and apply this to practical situations as they apply to professional conduct;
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of the ethical frameworks influencing animal use in society;
- be able to demonstrate communication skills resulting in the ability to effectively interact with clients, staff and colleagues;
- be able to demonstrate basic business acumen;
- be able to synthesise a literature review focused on a contemporary issue of relevance to veterinary technology;
- be able to demonstrate skills of critical analysis and personal reflection; and
- be able to demonstrate professional behaviour.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Professional ethics and conduct
- Legal restrictions - veterinary regulations, welfare regulation, codes of conduct
- Personal management including dealing with personal stress, conflict and euthanasia
- Research: finding and evaluation literature, training in experimental design, interpreting and analysing research data and the ethical use of animals in research
- Communicating effectively with different cultural groups
- OH&S with particular focus on the handling of large and exotic animal species
- Acquiring employment: selection of potential workplace, the needs of employers, writing CVs, the application process
- Critiquing research papers using a range of research paradigms: quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods
- Undertaking a literature review; structuring and writing a literature review
