ASC392 Veterinary Medical Nursing (8)
Abstract
The subject extends the student's knowledge and skills in veterinary nursing in the field of medical nursing. Successful completion of this subject enables students to: coordinate nursing procedures to support veterinarians and achieve best possible outcomes for patients; provide veterinary support in consultation; provide high quality care to hospitalised patients; prepare equipment, materials and medications; prepare patients for a range of procedures; and provide high levels of infection control.
This subject includes online modules, 10 days of workplace learning in a veterinary clinic/hospital and a 3 day residential school (for students studying on campus or by distance education).

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to implement diagnostic or therapeutic plans.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Physical examination and compilation of patient history
- The technologist's role in veterinary consults
- Nursing for various lifestages: neonatal, growing, adult (including gestating and lactating) and geriatric animals
- Nursing for patients with specific conditions including but not limited to endocrine disorders, neoplasia, allergies, dermatological conditions
- Chronic pain management
- Behaviour modification
- Advanced first aid
- Preventative health
- Nursing exotic animals
- Infection control - isolation practices
- Referral procedures

Residential School| This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
The purpose of the residential school is to ensure that students have the required veterinary nursing competencies to meet industry expectations and international accreditation requirements. The program will include tutorials and practical classes associated with the following: physical examination, history taking; advanced first aid; exotic animals; referrals; and isolation protocols and procedures.

Work Place Learning| This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 10 days duration.
The workplace learning is to be undertaken in an approved (by the Subject coordinator) veterinary clinic and involves the student gaining practical skills associated with veterinary medical nursing.

Specialised Resources|
Students will be required to undertake workplace learning (in a veterinary clinic) for which they will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation. Additional travel and accommodation may be needed to attend a compulsory residential school conducted on campus at either CSU Wagga Wagga or GOTAFE, Wangaratta, Victoria depending on resource requirements. Students will be advised at commencement of session with regards to the location of the residential school.
