BMS105 Science Communication and Methodology (8)

Abstract

This subject is designed to provide a firm foundation for developing skills in scientific communication. Students will learn academic, information, and digital literacy skills as well as numeracy skills relevant to their discipline of study. The subject will also introduce students to critical analysis of the scientific literature and the scientific method. This subject will also raise awareness in students to professional and ethical issues relating to health and medical sciences.

  • be able to describe and apply the scientific method as it applies to the featured disciplines
  • be able to critically analyse a scientific paper
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of professional and ethical issues related to health and medical science, including research

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Communication skills: library familiarisation, literature searches, written communication, scientific report writing; academic literacy skills including referencing and issues of plagiarism.
  • The scientific method and an introduction to experimental design (including critical analysis of the scientific literature)
  • Laboratory mathematics including introductory data management and presentation
  • Principles of safe work practices and philosophy in laboratories and other workplaces
  • Professional and ethical issues: patient confidentiality, patenting, research ethics, professional development, professional associations and membership.
