Abstract|
This subject introduces students to general pathological processes and subsequently examines the application of these processes in a number of major body systems. Students will examine the role the cytology and histopathology laboratories play in diagnosing human diseases, and will learn to identify the macroscopic and microscopic changes associated with human disease processes. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to describe and identify the processes of cell injury, death and adaptations
- be able to describe and identify the processes associated with inflammation, tissue repair and neoplasia
- be able to apply knowledge of the basic pathological principles to a number of major body systems; and describe the aetiology, pathogenesis and morphologic features of selected human diseases
- be able to evaluate the role of the histopathology laboratory in the diagnosis of disease
- be able to describe the role of cytopathology and identify pre-malignant and malignant cells using cytological methods

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- General Pathology: cell injury, cell death and adaptations; inflammation and repair; neoplasia
- Systemic Pathology: pathology of the following body systems will be examined: female and male genital system, lung, gastrointestinal tract and the skin
- Histopathological and cytological diagnosis and techniques will be integrated throughout all topics
