BMS351 Integrated Clinical Placement 2 (8)
Abstract
In this subject students will complete a second supervised clinical placement within a pathology setting and submit a comprehensive portfolio based on their experience. This provides students with the opportunity to integrate the theoretical knowledge gained in the subjects studied and practice and consolidate their skills in a clinical environment. Students will be required to demonstrate their ability to reflect and critically evaluate their practice. Students will complete 210 placement hours as part of this subject and this completes the placement requirements for the pathology specialisaton. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate professional behaviour;
- be able to explain how to collect, prepare and analyse clinical data and/or specimens;
- be able to demonstrate problem solving and decision making skills;
- be able to work independently and as a team member to solve problems and interpret data in a medical science workplace setting;
- be able to communicate effectively in both written and oral format within a multidisciplinary workplace;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of workplace health and safety and safe work practices relevant to the discipline;
- be able to integrate information from various laboratory or other workplace sites in making decisions and to recognise appropriate responses to data discrepancies;
- be able to describe the procedures employed to assess the accuracy, reproducibility and validity of current laboratory methods;
- be able to reflect on their experience and maintain a portfolio identifying clinical / practical experiences and the learning that has taken place as a result of these experiences.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Communication skills and professional behaviour (including career development and job application skills)
- Collection, preparation and analysis of clinical data and/or specimens
- Maintenance and promotion of safe work practices
- Reflective practice and portfolio development

Work Place LearningThis subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 30 days duration.
Student undertake 30 days placement at an appropriate site, for example a pathology or research laboratory.
During placement students will complete tasks directed towards meeting the Competency-based Standards for Medical Scientists, engage in reflective practice and develop a portfolio which will be submitted for assessment.
Students will be responsible for travel and accommodation while on placement and may be required to attend placement away from their normal residence.

Students are responsible for costs associated with travel or accommodation associated with placement and with ensuring necessary pre-placement requirements (e.g. immunisation, police checks, first aid certificate) are completed.
