BMS502 Fundamentals of Biotechnology (16)

Abstract

This subject will consider four of the major areas of biotechnology. It will give a broad overview of current theory on DNA structure and function, protein structure and function and lifecycles of pro and eukaryotic organisms.

+ Subject Availability Modes and Location

Continuing students should consult the SAL for current offering details prior to contacting their course coordinator: BMS502
Where differences exist between the handbook and the SAL, the SAL should be taken as containing the correct subject offering details.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* describe the structure of DNA
* describe the major DNA related processes as DNA replication, RNA transcription and protein translation;
* Understand how DNA integrity is being maintained by repair processes and how mutations are formed;
* describe the structure of proteins and its relation to protein function;
* understand the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure of proteins and how they influence protein function
* Understand and describe basic enzymological principles and how these principles are influenced by protein structure;
* Have a general understanding of the structure and life cycle of pro- and eukaryotic cells;

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
* Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cell structure and function * DNA structure and function * DNA related processes (Replication and Transcription) * RNA translation * DNA repair and maintenance * Protein structure and function * Basic enzymology * The life cycle of pro and eukaryotic organisms
