CLS307 Transition to Paramedic Practice (8)

Abstract

This subject has been developed as the final subject for the undergraduate Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) program for both internal and distance education students. This subject sets the foundation for future clinical practice by requiring students to integrate and consolidate knowledge and skills developed in preceding subjects and to demonstrate that they have clinical judgement and decision making skills to apply this to real-world situations. This subject focuses on ensuring students are able to successfully transition to professional practice. Distance education students will be required to attend a compulsory residential school (5 days) in order to practice, and have assessed, clinical knowledge and practical skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the expected standards of conduct and performance in paramedicine
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental knowledge required for autonomous and accountable paramedic clinical practice
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to use the approved scope of practice skills necessary for autonomous and accountable paramedic clinical practice
  • be able to identify, interpret, and use clinical decision making appropriately when presented with a health or social care problem-based clinical scenario in a simulated environment
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to critically reflect and evaluate the impact and response to clinical decisions within the context of patient care
  • be able to perform effective oral communication for clinical diagnosis and judgment in order to make an informed and reasonable treatment decision
  • be able to demonstrate the necessary skills for duty of care, maintaining professional relationships, interdisciplinary and collaborative communication, and ethics to function and operate safely as a paramedic in professional practice

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The use of clinical knowledge and skills necessary to practice as a paramedic for patients experiencing a cardiovascular, respiratory or medical emergency.
  • The use of clinical knowledge and skills necessary to practice as a paramedic for patients involved a traumatic emergency.
  • Clinical decision making pertinent to the development of a diagnosis and treatment of medical emergencies.
  • Clinical decision making pertinent to the development of a diagnosis and treatment of traumatic emergencies.
  • The use of clear communication to convey information for clinical diagnosis and treatment during clinical practice.
  • Topics relevant to the transition from the student role to professional practice as a paramedic.
  • Topics relevant to contemporary paramedic practice.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school. One week residential school for distance education students in order to conduct a review of skills and then administer their psychomotor examination
