COM122 Australian Screen and Stage (8)

Abstract

Through the close analysis of selected Australian films, filmed plays and television productions, this subject examines the way that the various elements of medium, genre, structure and content are assembled to give such productions impact and meaning in the context of national culture. The subject considers each of the works as national, cultural statements and surveys changes and similarities in popular perspectives on Australian identity.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate the ability to critically read texts made for the screen and stage
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the compositional components of visual texts
- be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationship between
Australian television, film and theatre and Australian national identity
- be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of selected texts
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of theories of cultural production and national identity
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the dominant themes in Australian national identity
- be able to present an analysis informed by theoretical arguments
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the practices of critical writing

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- introduction to the constructed nature of national identity through examination of landscape - introduction to the constructed nature of national identity through examination of immigration and Aboriginality - introduction to the constructed nature of national identity through examination of urban settings in Australian texts - critical analysis and comparison of the set films, plays and television productions.
