COM225 TELEVISION: HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL PERSPECTIVES (8)

Abstract

This subject traces the development of television from its beginnings to the present. Particular attention is given to the historical contexts in which television has evolved and to relationships between this mass communications medium and society.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the development of television, particularly its institutional forms in Britain, the United States and Australia
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the impact on the television industry of relevant technological, economic and social developments
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of arguments about the impact of television on politics and society
- be able to demonstrate an appreciation of current issues concerning the role of television within national societies and globally
