COM421 Theory Production, Performance (16)

Abstract

A subject which explores at an advanced level the major theories which seek to explain the nature of television and theatre production, design, and performance. Theoretical approaches explored will include structuralism, post-structuralism, feminism, genre studies, semiotics, and cultural imperialism and globalisation, and their application to students' areas of specialisation, such as television (writing, authorship, composition, camera, directing, post-production and reception); or theatre and television design (concept, interpretation, designer/director relationship, style and genre, mise-en-scene, lighting, sound and costuming); or performance (including classical and neo-classical performance; realism, Stanislavski, and the Method; expressionism and Brecht; culturally constructed theatre; and post-modernism).

Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of the how these major theories apply to either:
- Television production/development
- Stage and screen performance.
- Design for theatre and television
Relate that understanding to the work of contemporary practitioners working in the industry, and to their own practice.
- engage in scholarly written and oral discourse with regards to production and performance theory and current practices.

and individual study programs will be selected from: - An overview of television and theatre production, design and performance theory, scholarship, research and discourse Production, design and performance aspects of: - Structuralism - Post-structuralism - Feminist theory as applied to theatre and television - Genre studies - Semiotics - Cultural imperialism and globalisation Application of those theories to television, with particular reference to: - Concepts of authorship - Style and genre - Writing - Composition - Camera and Lighting - Directing - Post-production - Reception Application of those theories to theatre and television design, with particular reference to: - Concept - Interpretation - Designer/director relationship - Style and genre - Mise-en-scene, including space, sets and properties - Lighting and sound - Costuming Application of those theories to performance theories for screen and stage, with particular reference to: - Classical and neo-classical performance theory - Realism, Stanislavski and The Method - Expressionism and Brechtian theories of performance - The performance theories of culturally constructed theatre - Post-modernist performance theory The relationship between theory and practice
