COM510 Contemporary Communication Theory (8)

Abstract

This subject explores contributions to the communication field from a range of disciplines and focuses on changing conceptions of audience and organisation. Students develop an understanding of classical and contemporary theories that aid their exploration of current debates in the field, and the relationship between communication and organisation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of significant contributions to communication studies from disciplines including psychology, social psychology, socio-linguistics and social anthropology
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of theoretical frameworks in communication studies and the debates about underlying assumptions
- be able to demonstrate an ability to develop critical evaluation techniques for assessing contemporary communication (and related) theories
- be able to apply theories and methods to communication problem solving

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Philosophical foundations
- Nature of communication theories and methods
- Contemporary debates and analysis of paradigms
- Aproaches to theory: the researcher's perspective and social-psychological, psychological, sociological, cultural, linguistic and semiotic approaches
- Applications of communication theories: decision making and systems design
- Criteria for decision making
- Communication as information transmission
- Communication as shared meaning - definitional problems and new perspectives

Residential School

This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school. The residential school will review learning and examine foundational communication paradigms. Case studies and contemporary issues will be explored.
