COM521 Drama and Theatre of Celebration (16)

Abstract

An examination of the principles of outdoor performance, event, specific drama, parade design, construction, marshalling, and enactment will be made. An inquiry into the unique character of event and site-specific audiences will examine the role of dialogue in research and devising contexts. Theoretical viewpoints will be analysed, synthesised and evaluated with a view to expanding existing models of cultural performance participation. Design principles and practices of scaling and animating giant image construction will be explored. A design portfolio will document coursework and an annotated bibliography will research international perspectives on image development, use of music and site specific drama.

Enrolment restrictions

Admission to Master of Arts (Communication - Cultural Performance). Students who have successfully completed EDC501 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- analyse the principles of outdoor performance and site specific drama
- design three times human scale parade and carnival images
- explain and apply the principles of parade design and marshalling
- develop and practice strolling musical bands using percussion and melody
- design site specific theatre of image events

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- site specific drama and theatre of celebration - techniques and design principles of large scale, articulated and mobile image making - parade design and construction from small to large scale - parade marshalling and site specific set dressing - principles of strolling band design and operation using percussion and melodies from different cultures and through generating new rhythms - Street Theatre and Celebratory Performance
