COM523 Site-Specific Cultural Performance (16)

Abstract

An examination of community based site specific cultural performance. The use of action research will lead to the design of an event for a specific nominated site and audience. It will include a literature search, an analysis of similar events, statements of intent, an articulation of the philosophy behind the artistic design, defined and illustrated operational principles of crowd control, an action plan, budget, a detailed production schedule and recommendations for the community. It will be presented as a feasibility study for the conduct of the proposed event, which if approved would be caried out.

Enrolment restrictions

Admission to Master of Arts (Communication - Cultural Performance). Student who have successfully completed EDC502 are not eligible to enrol in this subject

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- implement community based theatre of celebration projects
- analyse the activation of specific-event audiences, their participation and positioning within the community environment
- critically examine the principles of outdoor performance, site design, site decoration and scheduling with an educational framework
- negotiate a site-specific event brief with a potential client
- develop a series of site specific event programs
- engage in an action research trial of a cultural dramatic event

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- student will map different sites for access, power, safety, crowd control, transport - private and public, security, event placements, performance areas, audience site lines and comfort, amenities, water - students will research the historical and cultural significance of the site through interview, observation and literature - students will discuss and research the vision of the site's custodian/s for the site - students will develop initial design proposals which will be negotiated and developed as a project - an action research project will be carried out in a school with Department of Education and Training approval
