Abstract

This subject introduces students to an extensive range of border management issues including policy, legislation, compliance management, and economic and social impact. Comparative international studies and the application of international norms and legislation in areas such as migration, security, customs and quarantine are a key aspect of this subject.

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Overview of border management: the concept of border management and Historical perspective
  • Agency roles and responsibilities: Customs Immigration Quarantine & Agriculture Police Other agencies
  • Border management environment: Regulatory environment, Physical environment, Information and environment, control environment
  • Border management principles and techniques: Operational Risk Management and Intelligence gathering, analysis & dissemination, compliance management, use of information and communication technology
  • Border management approaches: Integrated Border Management, Coordinated Border Management and Collaborative Border Management
  • Contemporary and emerging issues: Global issues Regional & local issues
