Abstract
In this subject students will be introduced to the determinants of oral health from a sociological perspective and learn how these impact on oral health outcome, including cultural perspectives of health. Key concepts of health promotion relevant for oral health practitioners will be established with an emphasis on effective community engagement. Communicating with communities with high health needs will be an emphasis. A foundation of the oral health therapist’s role in oral health promotion and improving oral health outcome will be established, covering concepts of need in oral health, power and authority in dental care and conceptual models of health and illness.
A deeper knowledge will be developed when planning a meaningful oral health promotion activity in partnership with a regional community group.

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to apply sociological concepts and theories to oral health inequities
- be able to define key concepts of oral health promotion, with a deeper understanding on assessments of oral health and planning an intervention
- be able to discuss and describe strategies of health promotion: school, workplace and community programs
- be able to discuss and describe effective team / group approaches to health promotion
- be able to demonstrate the ability to identify behavioural models of oral health
- be able to establish key concepts of cultural persectives on health, and how these relate to overall health outcome
- be able to demonstrate professional behaviour and attitudes at all times in all learning environments

- Health communication and health literacy
- Cultural perspectives of health and oral health
- Oral health advocacy
- Introduction to public health knowledge
- Effective preventive measures at individual, community and population level
- The role of the oral health practitioner in improving health outcome
- Models of behaviour change

Work Place Learning| This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 5 days duration.
Students will be required to engage effectively in groups with a chosen high need community group to plan and develop oral health promotion activities.
