Abstract

This is the final oral science subject which further develops the knowledge needed to differentiate healthy tissue from unhealthy tissue. It focuses on advanced oral care related to high need patients and includes managing oral care for patients with systemic disease. Advanced clinical pathology will be examined. Students use a case-based approach to inform their decision making to justify specific health care decisions. This subject uses a evidenced based approach to guide the student to provide up-to-date currency in practice.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Oral Health (Therapy/Hygiene) course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify advanced systemic conditions that result in oral manifestations
  • be able to assess and apply correct procedures for systemic conditions that have periodontal conditions associated with them
  • be able to evaluate and implement biomedical preventative strategies to reduce the risk of oral pathology
  • be able to analyse and evaluate interventional science of oral pathology
  • be able to demonstrate professional behaviour and attitudes at a level ready to be registered as a health professional at all times

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • advanced oral pathologies of rare conditions
  • chemotherapy for the control of periodontal diseases
  • advanced periodontal and caries management therapies
  • care planning for patients with disabilities and multi-factorial oral health conditions
  • vulnerable and high risk populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities
