Abstract

In this subject students will continue to develop competencies in a range of advanced simulated fixed prosthodontic procedures. Students will be introduced to minor oral surgical procedures. This subject will also include a study of the role and application of therapeutics in patient care.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Dental Science course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

 -be able to demonstrate knowledge of fixed prosthodontics and continued development of competence in a range of advanced simulated fixed prosthodontic procedures;
-be able to demonstrate understanding and clinical competence relevant to the provision of simple minor oral surgical procedures;
-be able to demonstrate the clinical application of pharmacological principles with particular relevance to optimal oral and dental health.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
-Advanced preclinical fixed prosthodontics
-Introduction to minor oral surgery
-Dental therapeutics
-Patient evaluation and medical history
-Surgical extractions
-Surgical management of impacted third molar teeth
-Pre-prosthetic oral surgery
-Conservative surgical crown lengthening
-Endodontic periradicular microsurgery
-The evaluation and treatment of oral lesions
-Infections and antibiotic administration
-Management of perioperative bleeding
