EEB419 Education Studies: Indigenous Studies (8)

Abstract

This subject offers students a comprehensive introduction to Indigenous cultures, history and education from the standpoint of Indigenous social justice. The aim of this subject is to provide students with the requisite knowledge and skills for designing and implementing Indigenous studies curriculum, and the requisite knowledge and skills for the application of culturally germane pedagogies in response to the educational needs of Indigenous students. Through this subject students will be empowered to develop a greater awareness of Indigenous socio-cultural and socio-political contexts, and advance their own understanding of the dynamics of Indigenous values, worldview and identity.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate a knowledge of foundational Indigenous culture and Indigenous cultural diversity
- demonstrate a knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing
- demonstrate a knowledge of Indigenous history, particularly in terms of dispossession, segregation, protectionism and assimilation
- demonstrate a knowledge of the principles of social justice, self-determination and reconciliation
- recognise and understand the socio-cultural, socio-political and historical dimension of issues that impact Indigenous Australians and Indigenous educational participation
- be able to design and implement an effective Indigenous studies program in accordance with established curricula and act on the imperative to involve Indigenous peoples in the process
- apply Indigenous perspective across Key Learning Areas
- respond with culturally appropriate pedagogy to the learning needs of Indigenous students
- recognise and respond to the cultural values and worldview of Indigenous students, families and communities
- respond with culturally appropriate forms of communication with Indigenous students, families and communities.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Part 1: A Knowledge Framework for Understanding Indigenous Cultures, History and Education - The ontological foundations of Indigenous being - The cultural geography of Indigenous Australia - The epistemological foundations of Indigenous knowing - The foundational context of contemporary Indigenous identity - Invasion, colonialism, dispossession and resistance - Segregation, protectionism and assimilation - Indigenous defiance, citizenship and political activism. Part 2: A Skills Framework for Advancing Indigenous Cultures, History and Education - Indigenous identity and education - Indigenous education policy and the transition to praxis - Indigenous issues in curriculum and pedagogy - Developing culturally apposite curriculum - Implementing culturally germane pedagogy - Engaging with Indigenous families and communities.
