EER415 Special Study in Early Childhood (8)

Abstract

This subject provides students with opportunities to examine current issues in care and education of young children. International, national and local aspects of early childhood policy, practice and professionalism will be considered. Students will explore one issue in depth from research and/or their own practical experience. Issues such as social justice and equity, quality and related public policy are examined in an integrated approach. The role of educators as agents for change will be explored. This subject involves a high level of independent study which involves students negotiating a specific topic to be addressed with the lecturer.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- investigate critically contemporary early childhood policy;
- identify the implications of policy upon pedagogy, leadership and management practices;
- apply their understanding of topic under investigation to their own practices as a teacher; and,
- evaluate the impact of teacher investigations on current and future practices as early childhood teachers and advocates;
 

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- developments in contemporary national and international early childhood policy;
- action research specifically planning and evaluating program interventions;
- identification and evaluation of policy related information from a diverse range of sources e.g. commissioned reports, legislation and professional publications; and,
- political advocacy.
