Abstract

This subject will provide a theoretical framework for physical activity and physical conditioning for healthy individuals or population groups. This knowledge will be applied in the development of specific exercise training programs with the goal to improve health, wellness and performance. This subject has both theoretical and practical components, thus students will be expected to demonstrate understanding and knowledge of all objectives, as well as proficiency in practical skills.
This subject includes a compulsory residential school if the subject is undertaken by Distance Education.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a variety of physical conditioning techniques (inlcuding resistance training) as outlined by the National Strength and Conditioning Association;
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate pre-exercise screening via client consultations, and subsequent development of an appropriate short-term periodised training program for healthy individuals or population groups (including students, athletes and general population);
  • be able to describe the theoretical framework underlying various training regimes (including warm-ups, flexibility, aerobic training, speed/agility, and resistance training for the development of muscular strength, power, hypertrophy and endurance);
  • be able to describe the effects of training on various systems of the body (eg. the endocrine system);
  • be able to evaluate the effects of various factors on health, wellness and performance (eg. age, sex, ergogenic aids, nutritional considerations);

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Client consultations and pre-screening for activity readiness;
  • Warm-ups, stretching and basic training principles;
  • Appropriate training methods to improve cardiovascular fitness, core stability, flexibility and properties of muscular function;
  • Developing training programs for clients needs/goals (eg. weight loss, aerobic fitness, muscular strength, muscular power, muscular hypertrophy, muscular endurance flexibility;
  • Development of a short-term periodised training program;
  • Biomechanics of resistance training and how it affects various systems of the body;
  • Factors that affect health, wellness and performance (including age, sex, ergogenic aids, nutritional considerations).

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school. Distance Education students are required to attend a three (3) day Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period.
This Residential School is necessary in order to comply with accreditation requirements and to complete the appropriate volume of learning required in this subject in laboratory and practical settings.

Specialised Resources

Distance Education students are required to attend a Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period to access laboratory facilities. This will require students to arrange and finance their own travel and accommodation.
