EHR311 Advanced Human Exercise Physiology (8)

Abstract

This subjects applies physiological principles to explain acute responses to exercise and chronic adaptations to training, with emphasis on the muscular and cardiovascular systems. The laboratory component is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct standard physical fitness assessments, which are applicable for employment in clinical, corporate and community fitness programs, as well as exercise and sports science research.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to:
- display the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to successfully undertake standard fitness testing;
- perform a clinical evaluation of resting performance and exercise tolerance;
- display the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of basic pathology;
- display the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of basic histology;
- perform a clinical evaluation of blood and urine chemistry.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Theoretical and practical skills for the evaluation of resting performance and exercise tolerance for pulmonary function, cardiac function, muscle strength, and body composition. - Basic pathology techniques such as venipuncture and blood and urine analysis. - Introduction to histological analysis of contractile tissue.
