EHR329 Biomechanical Analysis of Human Movement (8)

Abstract

The subject will develop a student's capability to apply biomechanical theoretical concepts and methods to analyse the causes and effects of movement tasks. A problem-focused learning design will require students to review and interpret literature to construct, apply and justify the research design, which will include performing data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of kinetic, kinematic and/or electromyography data. At the completion of this subject, students will be able to perform a three-dimensional biomechanical analysis of a human movement task to identify biomechanical issues attributing to an injury and/or potential injury risk factor, or to improve performance to provide critical information to assist clinicians and/or coaches to develop and implement effective injury prevention and/or rehabilitation program, and/or improve performance.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain and apply the principles of kinetic data collection, analysis and interpretation;
  • be able to explain and apply the principles of three-dimensional kinematic data collection, analysis and interpretation;
  • be able to describe and apply the principles of surface electromyography data collection, analysis and interpretation;
  • be able to design, collect and analyse appropriate kinematic, kinetic and surface electromyography variables to perform a biomechanical analysis of a movement task;
  • be able to gather and critique biomechanical journal articles;
  • be able to author a three-dimensional biomechanical report on a specific movement task for an athlete and/or coach that provides appropriate recommendations aimed at improving performance, reducing the likelihood of injury and/or implementing an effective injury prevention and/or rehabilitation program.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Force Transducers
  • Surface Electromyography
  • Motion Capture Systems
  • Data Analysis and Reduction
  • Scientific Writing

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school. The Residential School to be scheduled in Week 1 of the mid-session CSU residential period. Each student will be required for one (1) University week (5 days), which will include laboratory sessions on each day for each student. Laboratory sessions to include:
  • identification of force platform ground reaction styles;
  • instruction on use of motion capture system and software;
  • data collection and analysis;
  • instruction on surface electromyography.
Data collection will aid completion of Assessment requirements.
