EHR524 Workplace Assessment & Rehabilitation (8)

Abstract

Opportunities for employment in workplace assessment and rehabilitation are increasing for Exercise Physiologists. This subject uses online lectures, case study tutorials, group work activities and a Residential School to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required to perform roles in workplace injury prevention and management. Emphasis is placed on developing knowledge and comprehension of employee compensation systems, legislative requirements, employee injury statistics, occupational health and safety assessment, functional capacity evaluations, factors influencing employee return to work rates, and the application of exercise rehabilitation in the management of clients with workplace injuries and diseases. After completing this subject, students will be able to: perform functional task analyses for particular workplace roles; assess an injured employee's functional capacity; evaluate worker's ability to perform normal duties or recommend appropriate work tasks; develop safe and effective work conditioning programs and graded return to work plans that promote return to full duties or other appropriate tasks; and develop workplace strategies to reduce the risk of employee re-injury.

Enrolment restrictions

Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology students or as approved by the Course Director.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe national worker compensation schemes, legislation and frameworks and recognise professional roles available to Exercise Physiologists in workplace injury prevention and management settings;
  • be able to discuss core principles of ergonomics within the home, workplace environments and workplace injury prevention and rehabilitation;
  • be able to identify and select appropriate functional capacity evaluations that are applied in workplace settings;
  • be able to demonstrate capacity to perform functional task analyses of workplace roles and effectively evaluate employee requirements to successfully perform such duties;
  • be able to demonstrate ability to perform functional capacity evaluations to assess an injured employee's capability to safely perform normal duties and recommend appropriate work tasks;
  • be able to design safe and effective work conditioning programs and graded return to work plans that promote return to full duties or other appropriate tasks that meet the needs of all stakeholders.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The role of various allied health professionals in workplace assessment and rehabilitation;
  • Understanding occupational injury epidemiology and risk factors;
  • Workplace rehabilitation law and legislation;
  • Workplace assessment;
  • Applying ergonomics principles to various work place environments;
  • Pre-employment functional capacity assessments;
  • Functional capacity evaluation;
  • Workplace injury prevention;
  • Work conditioning programs;
  • Psycho-social factors and other return to work barriers;
  • Planning and managing workers not meeting return to work plan goals;
  • Workplace rehabilitation case management;
  • Effective communication for workplace assessment and rehabilitation.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school. Distance Education students are required to attend a three (3) day COMPULSORY Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period.  This Residential School is necessary in order to develop practical skills to comply with accreditation requirements.

Specialised Resources

Distance Education students are required to attend a Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period to access laboratory facilities. This will require students to arrange and finance their own travel and accommodation.
