Abstract|
This subject provides a doctoral level introduction to research and introduces candidates to the first two ajor challenges of their work, the literature review and the development of their research rationale. Candidates will gain the tools of the social science researcher, as well as establish familiarity with the various processes and protocols of candidature. At the completion of this subject candidates will be able to clearly articulate the purpose of their research, understand the ethics application process and discuss critically the key literature informing their research topic. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be familiar with the principles which underlie and inform social science research
- be able to discuss critically the relevant literature applicable to their research project, and from that discussion draw research question(s) and a corresponding rationale
- be able to locate their research project within the broader context of their discipline
- have a clear understanding of the nature of research as a process of speculative inquiry
- be able to manage a research project combining independent study and supervision effectively
- be able to articulate the social impact on, and social implications of, their research
- appreciate the importance of transparency, accountability, academic writing standards, the ethics process and codes of conduct in research
